NEWSLETTER WINTER

Thanks to everyone who made an effort to promote Bladder Cancer awareness in May. While bladder cancer patients get far more support in Australia than they did a decade ago, the disease does not get enough attention and funding to really make a difference.

Compared to breast cancer, lung cancer & prostate cancer, bladder cancer is still the secret cancer in society.

Everything that was done to promote awareness in May saves lives!

People taking action to investigate their dodgy pee is a result. We just need more attention year round. Please donate to help our work:

Congratulations Professor Nathan Lawrentschuk

Photograph of Nathan LawrentschukNathan is a dynamo in the world of urology and we are very proud that he is a co-founder of our charity and an invaluable board member. In conjunction with Research Review, Nathan has put together an excellent summary of major advances from the 2024 European Association of Urology Congress held in Paris earlier this year.

For all involved in urology - doctors, nurses, therapists - this is a MUST READ document. Five pages that will bring you up to date on Nathan's thoughts from thirteen sessions in Paris.

New Board Member

Photograph of Mehdi AdhamiWe are delighted to welcome Mehdi Adhami to our board. Mehdi is a Urology Research Fellow at Icon Cancer Centre and Monash University School of Translational Medicine under A/Prof Jeremy Grummet.

Mehdi's primary research focus is on evaluating the role of focal low-dose-rate brachytherapy in men with low to intermediate risk prostate cancer. He has a strong passion for medical research, as evidenced by completing a Master of Surgery at the University of Sydney, thirty-eight citations across three years, and six publications in high-impact factor journals.

Mehdi is the current president of the Young Urology Research Organisation (YURO) committee, which is designed to support aspiring Urologists in the field of research. He is excited to assist BladderCancer.org.au in collaborating with YURO.

All about YURO

Young Urology Research Organisation

The Young Urology Researchers Organisation (YURO) is a collaborative Australian/New Zealand research organisation. It is dedicated to empowering trainee doctors with the knowledge, tools and connections to carry out meaningful research and further their careers in Urology. We are formed by trainee doctors, medical students, consultants, and others who have an interest in Urology.

Origins and Objectives

YURO was founded with the primary objective of supporting early-career researchers in urology. Recognising the challenges faced by young professionals in establishing their careers and contributing to scientific research, YURO aims to provide resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities. The organisation fosters an environment where young researchers can share knowledge, collaborate on projects, and develop the skills necessary for successful careers in urology.

The core objectives of YURO include:

1. Facilitating Research and Innovation: Encouraging high-quality research through collaborative projects.

2. Professional Development: Offering mentorship and career development resources.

3. Networking and Collaboration: Creating platforms for trainees to connect, share ideas, and form research partnerships.

4. Advocacy and Representation: Representing the interests of prevocational urology trainees within the broader medical and research communities.

Activities and Programs

YURO organises a variety of activities and programs designed to support its members and the broader research community. These initiatives range from annual events to mentorship programs.

1. Inaugural Urological Skills and Research Night: This annual seminar, delivered by YURO members and senior faculty, covers a range of topics, including how to get started with urological research, essential skills as a urology resident, and applying for the urology training program.

2. Mentorship Programs: Experienced urologists and researchers provide guidance to younger members through formal mentorship. These mentors offer advice on career development, research strategies, and navigating the academic landscape.

3. Research Grants and Scholarships: YURO links researchers with grants and scholarships to support innovative projects. These funding opportunities help young researchers overcome financial barriers and focus on their work.

Impact on the Urology Research Community

The impact of YURO on the urology research community is multifaceted. By supporting young researchers, YURO contributes to the advancement of urological science and the development of future leaders in the field.

1. Advancement of Research: Young researchers, supported by the organisation, have published a large number of studies in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to the body of knowledge in areas such as urological oncology, minimally invasive surgery, and urinary tract disorders.

2. Career Development: YURO's professional development programs have helped many prevocationaltrainees achieve career milestones. The mentorship and training provided by YURO have enabled members to secure training positions and research grants.

3. Enhanced Collaboration: By facilitating networking and collaboration, YURO has fostered a spirit of cooperation within the urology research community. Collaborative projects initiated through YURO have resulted in multidisciplinary research teams that bring together diverse expertise to tackle complex urological issues.

4. Representation and Advocacy: YURO plays a crucial role in advocating for the interests of prevocationaltrainees. The organisation represents its members in discussions with senior faculty, funding bodies, and academic institutions, ensuring that the voices of early-career researchers are heard and their needs addressed.

In conclusion, YURO plays a vital role in supporting the next generation of urologists and researchers. Through its initiatives, YURO has significantly contributed to the advancement of urological research and the professional development of early-career researchers. As it continues to grow and evolve, YURO is poised to make even greater contributions to the field of urology and the broader medical research community.
